Bridal Portrait Session Along the Shores of Lake Temiskaming
Building a strong wedding portfolio takes practice, creativity, and a willingness to embrace different lighting conditions. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a bridal-inspired portrait session with Bella along the shores of Lake Temiskaming in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario.
The goal of the session was to create elegant bridal portraits while continuing to develop my wedding photography skills and portfolio. With a beautiful dress, a variety of locations, and changing lighting conditions throughout the day, it was the perfect opportunity to explore different styles of imagery.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this session was the opportunity to work in two very different environments around Lake Temiskaming.
Part of the session took place along the shoreline, where the light was softer and more forgiving. The water, open sky, and gentle light created a calm atmosphere that was perfect for elegant bridal portraits. These images have a timeless, romantic feel that many couples love and are often drawn to when planning their own wedding photography.
Later in the session, we moved into an open field under bright direct sunlight. Unlike the shoreline, there was very little natural shade available, making the lighting much more challenging. Rather than avoiding the conditions, I chose to embrace them and use the opportunity to continue developing my skills in more demanding light.
Working in both environments during the same session highlighted how dramatically light can change the look and feel of an image. It also served as a reminder that wedding photographers must be prepared to create beautiful photographs in a wide variety of conditions. Wedding days don't always happen during perfect golden-hour light, and being comfortable in both soft and harsh lighting situations is an important part of capturing a couple's story.
From the shoreline to the open field, this session provided a great opportunity to create a variety of images while continuing to build my wedding portfolio and refine my approach to natural-light portrait photography.
As a landscape photographer expanding into weddings and portraits, I enjoy incorporating the beauty of the surrounding environment into the story of an image. The natural scenery around Lake Temiskaming provided the perfect backdrop for this bridal session and showcased the variety of locations available throughout the region.
Every session is an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve. Experiences like this help me continue developing the skills needed to confidently photograph weddings, engagements, family sessions, and portraits in a wide range of conditions.
